Custom Home Theater Essentials

Many of our customers include a custom home theater as part of a home automation system installation. Whether part of a larger project or undertaken on its own, designing a custom home theater system is more than just assembling equipment; it’s about curating an immersive experience that transports you into the heart of your favorite movies and shows.

From room layout to equipment selection, every detail plays a crucial role in shaping ambiance and functionality. Here are some essential considerations and steps that AMP Systems considers when designing and installing dream home theaters throughout the Las Vegas area.

Room Size and Layout

The first step in designing your home theater is assessing the available space. We consider the room dimensions, ceiling height, and any architectural features that may impact the layout, and arrange seating in a way that provides clear sightlines to the screen, allowing every viewer to enjoy the action without obstruction.

Optimal viewing distance from the screen follows what is known as the “2 to 5 Rule”; that is, seating should not be closer than 2x nor further away than 5x the screen width. For optimal viewing of an 83-inch screen, for example, seating should be situated between 166 to 415 inches (14 to 35 feet) from the screen.

Choosing the right seating is essential for comfort and enjoyment. Home theater recliners or dedicated theater seats with cup holders offer a luxurious and practical seating solution. We work with the homeowner to determine the number of seats based on family size or the frequency of guests, ensuring that everyone has a memorable cinematic experience.

Screen and Projector

Deciding between a large flat-panel TV (such as these by LG) or a front projector with a projection screen (such as these by Elune) depends on your preferences and room layout. Ultra-short-throw projectors are gaining popularity due to their space-saving design that requires a less complicated installation while still offering a high-quality viewing experience. When selecting a projector, we consider factors such as brightness, resolution, and throw distance to ensure optimal picture quality.

Speaker Placement

Investing in high-quality speakers is essential for achieving an immersive audio experience, and proper placement is crucial for creating a balanced soundstage. Front speakers should be positioned at ear level, with the center channel placed above or below the screen for clear dialogue. Surround speakers should be strategically placed around the room to envelop viewers in 3D sound, while subwoofers can be positioned anywhere for optimal bass distribution.

Enhancing sound quality with acoustic treatments can significantly improve your cinematic experience. We may incorporate acoustic panels, bass traps, and diffusers to reduce echoes and reflections. We pay attention to room layout, wall materials, and furniture placement to minimize sound distortion and optimize overall acoustics.

Lighting and Ambiance

Creating the right ambiance is essential for a true cinematic experience. We typically install dimmable lights to set the mood and create a theater-like atmosphere. Blackout curtains or shades are essential for controlling natural light during daytime viewing.

Home Theater Components

Selecting the right components is crucial for building a high-quality home theater system. Custom home theater installations by AMP Systems typically include some combination of the following, based on the homeowner’s needs, wants, and budget:

Source Components

Blu-ray players, streaming devices, gaming consoles, and media servers provide content. We ensure compatibility with 4K, HDR, and Dolby Vision formats for an immersive viewing experience.

AV Receiver or Processor

The heart of your system, the AV receiver or processor decodes audio signals and powers speakers. We will recommend one with sufficient channels and support for the latest audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

Front left, center, and right speakers form the core of your system, while surround speakers create a 3D soundstage. A subwoofer handles low-frequency effects, adding depth to the audio experience.

Projector and Screen

If going the projector route (rather than a flat-screen television), we will recommend a projector model based on brightness, resolution, and throw distance, and pair it with a motorized screen for added flexibility and convenience.

Cables and Wiring

We use only high-quality HDMI cables for video and audio transmission, ensuring a seamless connection between components. Wiring will be concealed for a clean and polished look, minimizing clutter and distractions.

We will include sufficient electrical outlets to avoid overloading circuits and may recommend installing dedicated circuits to accommodate high-power devices. Of course, surge protectors are always used to safeguard equipment from power spikes and fluctuations.

Custom Home Theater Costs

The cost of building a custom home theater can vary widely depending on all the factors discussed above. While a basic setup may start at a few thousand dollars, a high-end custom theater can exceed $100,000. We will work with you to identify your priorities and establish the project budget, prioritizing key components that will enhance your viewing experience and provide long-term enjoyment.
